On old Chinese ways of thinking [01 Jul 2009|04:36am]
[ mood | blah ]
[ music | FLOW- Days ]

I’ve been debating whether or not I should write about this. I don’t want to make it seem like I’m insulting my own people but I feel like getting this rant off my chest.

Top 8 things I hate about traditional Chinese way of thinking.

#8 The only exercise we get are "stretching the truth" and "jumping to conclusions."
As much as I respect my mom for not being a traditional Asian parent, she's very guilty of this. Of course, this also applies to most other old Chinese people. Not much I need to explain here. I just hate it when people jump to conclusions without sufficient evidence.

#7 Things will and should always stay the same
Although this gets on my nerves but I must say I can see where they’re coming from. After all, if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it, right? I pretty much see this every day I work at the Pharmacy. Almost every time when there is a problem with a Chinese patient’s copay or insurance, the first words to come out of their mouths are “But it worked last year, why wouldn’t it work now?” or “Last time it cost $x why is it $y now?” Of course, if something has worked before it is logical to assume it would work in the future. But please do consider the possibilities of some sort of change over time.

#6 Take down all the signs. No one reads them anyway.
Chinese people hate reading signs. Don’t believe me? Go to a big department store like wal-mart and see how many Chinese people enter through the exit. Also, I’ve seen way too many people push on a door when it has “PULL” written on it. Oh yeah, and don’t get me started on people asking for how to get to room #x when there is a sign that has an arrow pointing to the right in visible range.

#5 Statistics = bullcrap
Chinese people don’t seem to care much about statistics. If one or two people saw or experienced something, then it is enough to prove that it exists. For example, if old Chinese guy X has 100 friends and 2 of them claim that they saw ghosts, then ghosts must exist. What about the other 98 who hasn’t? Eh who cares? As long as someone did then it’s enough to prove its validity.

#4 888 = great fortune
-facepalm- How many Chinese people you know like having a bunch of 8’s in their phone #s, license plates, passwords, etc? And how many of them are actually rich?

#3 Food + Money = meaning of life
Refer to this article: http://www.happierabroad.com/Observations_Taiwan.htm

#2 Everything sucks BAWLS
Why do Chinese people have to see everything in a negative light? I know that people like to complain. I like to complain. Hell, I’m complaining right now. But traditionally, Chinese people just like talking shit. “You got an A on your exam? Go get an A+ next time then… BITCH!” “Oh you got an A+ this time. You better have or Ima layeth the smacketh down on your candy ass.” Unfortunately, this doesn’t just apply to older people. It seems like this whole negativity thing has transcended onto the newer generation as well. Think the youtube.com community is full of haters? Check youku.com. It’s like the gathering of the haters x200%. Almost every video has a wall of nerd rage all over… Which brings me to the #1 spot.

#1 “Patriotism”
It is understandable for a loyal citizen of a nation to be patriotic. But a lot of Chinese people just take it to a whole new level. This is mostly aimed at Japanese. I know that during WWII the Japanese put us through a lot of shit. But that’s 60+ years ago. Get over it. It’s sad that a ton of Chinese youths still hate the Japanese because…? I really don’t know. If someone can explain to me that’d be great. I’d go on a Chinese site like tudou, verycd, or youku and whenever there is some Japanese anime/drama there will always be a shit load of anti-Japanese comments written all over. It’s so pointless. If you really want to show patriotism, then go do something to strengthen your own country. Expressing e-rage won’t do shit.

-end rant-

Shinkenger is awesome

My updates comes in long intervals.. [04 Jun 2006|03:17am]
[ mood | bored ]
[ music | BoA - 七色の明日 ]

Having difficulty sleeping at my apartment, so I'll probably pull another one of these all-nighter things to re-adjust my sleeping pattern.

Finals coming up.. Don't want to think about that :(

Real bored so I took some time to update my little LJ profile, and added 2 new dekaranger icons. Also joined a sentai fanclub. Maybe tomorrow I'll edit up my facebook a bit since I haven't touched that in ages.

I actually visited wilson (for band) for their spring concert2 and jazz band. Changster was like WTF simon you back again? Where's your partner in crime (cameron)?
Damn wilson SUCKS so bad now. They totally butchered up Persis, one of my favorite pieces from band. And for some weird reason, Changster put not 1 but TWO 20th century-like songs in his concert that has a bunch of randomness and what not (one of them composed by changster himself...oh my!). It was nice hearing something different, but having an audience of mostly parents, siblings, and teachers who probably doesn't know a thing about music.. Those kind of songs are like a big WTF to them. There were a lot of ppl in the audience who were like err... wtf they playing. And having 2 songs like that really killed the concert's atmosphere.
Jazz band concert > Spring concert. Now you know how bad wilson has gotten after changster got married eh..

---

Finally going to switch my major to bio, but I can't yet cuz I haven't completed bio5 yet, so I just changed my college from engineering to natural science.. Which kinda sucks cuz I'm done with my GEs, but I can't go up to upper division classes yet.. So I don't even know what classes to take next quarter now.. Maybe I'll go back into taking Japanese during spring next year.

Surprisingly I found myself watching 0 anime as of late. Maybe it's just the quality of anime that has gone down, but I guess overall I'm more interested in watching real people than drawn ones. Only shows I'd download and watch are Jdramas (and some Kdramas forced on me by Eva =T ...btw they suck) and Toku series like Super Sentai and Ultraman.
Because sentai girls are the greatest :)

[24 Mar 2006|12:43am]
[ mood | calm ]
[ music | BoA - Everlasting ]

So today I was playing Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) and came up with a pretty interesting argument (kinda) with my EXP party.

To give a little introduction on what has happened:
Over the past few weeks I have been assisting a Linkshell (a clan/guild in FFXI) who use hacks to kill the toughest bosses in the game.

Here's a few pictures of one of those (Jormungand, lv 90 Dragon, 2nd hardest fight in the game):
http://streamload.com/aerith637/jorm00.jpg
http://streamload.com/aerith637/jorm01.jpg
http://streamload.com/aerith637/jorm02.jpg

So the argument was, why would I go help hackers, it is morally wrong to do so.

My answer was this: (and it didn't make a lot of people happy either):
I don't help hackers, I use them. I'd do anything that is good for business. Killing a boss like that earns me 1-2million gil per run. (Real life $20-40) That's not so bad considering it's only about a 2-3hr work. It is the most sufficient way of earning money in this game. Besides, if somebody gets in trouble for using hacks it will be them and not me. And once they get banned they've outlived their usefulness. They think I'm a bad person, but I don't really think i'm "bad." I just use bad people to my own benefit. (Perhaps in some sense that's even worse) Business is a drug and I think I'm an addict. I don't run an actual business in real life but I do try to in FFXI, seeing as the game's economy can be converted to real money as well and vice versa. I'm addicted to doing these kind of business. I love the feel of victory when I score millions in an instant. If it means supporting hackers, then so be it. I've been thinking of other ways of overcharging products as of late, and I'll probably put them into action when I have the time to. Is it morally right to? No. But hell, what can morals buy you in business? Morals don't come in quantities that can be used as a currency for exchange, so screw that. I suppose I have my own set of morals that I won't use such hacks for myself (other than some bots for a few minor things) So there is no better way than to have others take that risk and use them for me.

I think money can buy just about anything (in FFXI anyways). For example, when people give me help in game, I'd tip them. like "here's 100k for helping me on this quest. Thnx a bunch" and they go "Oh wow Rubie, you're so nice." Not that I'm that generous, but to make people think I'm generous. If I do that today, then tomorrow when I feel like making some money on a KSNM run I can ask that person I tipped and usually it will be difficult to say no to me. As a result I make more money on the KSNM than the small amount of tip I gave. Not to mention the trust I would that person. And trust is a powerful emotion to have in someone. Then, as a result of a KSNM run I let the helpers have the better end of the deal, and the process repeats. Yes, I do use those gamers as a steppingstone for better business. But hey, it's not like I'm totally evil, those people benefit from this as well (and not very little either, seeing as how "generous" i can be).

That is probably all I have to say. I don't think I'm as heartless as I am in real life compared to what I'm like in FFXI. Probably just because I think it's wrong to use real friends like that (to others though, it's ok).

THE AFFAIRS [23 Feb 2006|04:21pm]
[ mood | hyper ]
[ music | 三枝夕夏 IN db - Whenever I Think of You ]

Some funny stuff, even if you are not old and married....Enjoy.

The 1st Affair
A married man was having an affair with his secretary.
One day they went to her place and made love all afternoon.
Exhausted, they fell asleep and woke up at 8 PM.
The man hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and rub them in the grass and dirt.
He put on his shoes and drove home.
"Where have you been?" his wife demanded.
"I can't lie to you," he replied, "I'm having an affair with my secretary.
We had sex all afternoon."
She looked down at his shoes and said: "You lying bastard! You've been playing golf!"

The 2nd Affair
A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about having a son.
They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted.
The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy.
The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son.
He was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen.
He told his wife: "There's no way I can be the father of this baby.
Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered!
Have you been fooling around behind my back?"
The wife smiled sweetly and replied: "Not this time!"

The 3rd Affair
A mortician was working late one night.
He examined the body of Mr. Schwartz, about to be cremated, and made a startling discovery.
Schwartz had the largest private part he had ever seen!
"I'm sorry Mr. Schwartz," the mortician commented, "I can't allow you to be cremated with such an impressive private part. It must be saved for posterity."
So, he removed it, stuffed it into his briefcase, and took it home "I have something to show you won't believe," he said to his wife, opening his briefcase. "My God!" the wife exclaimed, "Schwartz is dead!"

The 4th Affair
A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the front door.
"Hurry," she said, "stand in the corner."
She rubbed baby oil all over him, and then dusted him with talcum powder.
"Don't move until I tell you," she said," pretend you're a statue."
"What's this?" the husband inquired as he entered the room.
"Oh it's a statue," she replied, "the Smiths bought one and I liked it so I got one for us, too."
No more was said, not even when they went to bed.
Around 2 AM the husband got up, went to the kitchen and returned with a sandwich and a beer.
"Here," he said to the statue, have this.
I stood like that for two days at the Smiths and nobody offered me a damned thing."

The 5th Affair
A man walked into a cafe, went to the bar and ordered a beer.
"Certainly, Sir, that'll be one cent."
"One Cent?" the man exclaimed.
He glanced at the menu and asked: "How much for a nice juicy steak and a bottle of wine?"
"A nickel," the barman replied.
"A nickel?" exclaimed the man.
"Where's the guy who owns this place?"
The bartender replied: "Upstairs, with my wife."
The man asked: "What's he doing upstairs with your wife?"
The bartender replied: "The same thing I'm doing to his business down here."

The 6th Affair
Jake was dying. His wife sat at the bedside.
He looked up and said weakly: "I have something I must confess."
"There's no need to," his wife replied.
"No," he insisted, "I want to die in peace.
I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!"
"I know," she replied, "now just rest and let the poison work."

Have a great day--

^Many of you reading might be asking this question :D

Been a long ass time since I've written something serious on here. I haven't written anything real serious since April last year.

2nd week into Winter quarter. Feel like I'm slacking off so much going back to 12units again. Kinda regret it now that my classes don't feel as difficult as they were last quarter. I'm turning nerdy @_@ I feel embarassed to say this, but calc is interesting. <don't kill me pls> Getting a B on my calc final last quarter really boosted my math confidence by miles. Scary thing is I find that shit interesting.. Damn myself!

My first day in chem this quarter.. The professor says something a lot of people might be familiar with. "No question is ever a stupid question. If you don't understand something, ask! Someone else probably has the same question so your classmates will love you for it!" I give that 2 words. BULL SHIT. Sometimes people ask questions so stupid it makes you think "wow, I go to the same class/school as this idiot?" Almost every day in chem, the following happens:

Professor: (just an example) explains: 1+1=2
Dumb kid: [raised hand] so, in other words, 1+1= ..err.. 2?
Professor: ... yes... That's what I just said.
Well.. no shit shirlock, idiot just repeats the professor asking for a confirmation. It's like they don't trust what the professor says or something and have to ask for a confirmation.

Last Thursday in 2nd quarter calc (UCR is math9b), while learning definite integrals, some Indian kid raises his hand and asks the professor "Sorry I don't understand this whole integral thing, what is this long S-like symbol, what is a and b stand for, and why do you put a dx at the end?" It's one of those times when just about everyone else in the class gives you a "WTF?!?!" look. Sadly the professor took about 20 minutes in our 90 minute class time explaining to him how to write integrals. My question is, wtf is someone like that doing in a 2nd quarter calculus class when he doesn't even understand stuff that was taught in math9a? I just packed my notes and got up and was going to leave. Me, being a pretty tall guy sitting in the front row getting up and leaving kinda made the professor unhappy so he told me to come back and told the stupid kid to finish explaining after lecture. I think if I was the professor I would've explain it in 5 seconds worth of time instead of 20 minutes. "You fail at life. Go take math9a again." After the lecture I passed my professor a piece of stratch paper with something like this written on it:

He just kinda laughed. I guess it's entertaining for a math teacher to see a student make fun of others with calculus langugage. Again.. Damn myself for turning nerdy. What happened to the me in highschool when I don't give a shit about anything.. /sigh

---

I need to buy a humilifier <sp?> for my apartment in riverside. Anyone know how much one costs? My mom said just put a water bucket in the room I was like wow.. we're not 300b.c. cave men to use something like that.

---

I'm watching a very depressing j-drama called 世界の中心で、愛を叫ぶ (Translation: shouting love at the center of the world). It's about this couple but the girl has leukemia. It's hard for me to keep watching this not because it's not good just because I don't wanna see the girl die. Today while working at the pharmacy some REALLY BITCHY lady was bitching at me the whole time about why her insurance won't let her get medicine today (why the hell is it my fault?) and that she has leukemia. One side of me feels like saying "COUGH up and die, bitch!" The other side of me got affected by this damn drama I'm watching and I'm actually feeling sorry for her because of her leukemia.. even though she bitches at me.

First update in 3 months: My review of Square Enix's new film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children [14 Sep 2005|12:18am]
[ mood | awake ]
[ music | Tsubasa Chronicle OST: A Song of Storm and Fire ]

**Contains minor spoilers**

Fans have waited literally years for FF7: AC and it's finally out (bootlegged anyways. You suckers gotta wait like another week for the real deal xD). Watched the film yesterday and here's what I think of it.

The graphics of this film is top-notch. I thought Final Fantasy Spirits Within had the greatest CG graphics ever but this movie proved me wrong. I think Advent Children has really raised the bar for all CG movies. Disney/Pixar better watch out because NONE of their movies can compare to what Advent Children has to offer. Even the Cloud bike-riding ending credit was extremely well-done.

Music was composed and arranged by no other than Nobuo Uematsu. A big chunk of the selections came from the game like Aerith's Theme, Tifa's Theme, J-E-N-O-V-A, and One Winged Angel. The other original tracks were well composed as well and fits right into the mood, although throwing in the classic battle theme would be nice.

The action sequences of this movie is what stands out the most. There are 4, 5 long action sequences total and each of them are absolutely stunning to watch. Everything is filled with over-the-top choreography that makes real-life action flicks look third-rate. However, (slight spoiler) the majority of the fights only has Cloud. There is only one big fight (and my personal favorite of this movie) where the whole crew joins him. But other than that, Cloud takes all of the spotlight.

Story is what totally kills this movie. *spoilers* A brief overview of the story: In the beginning you find that Rufus, the President of Shinra was actually not killed by Diamond Weapon and the Turks got Jenova's head from the northern crater after the battle. However 3 psychos who're similar to Sephiroth wants their "mother's" head back to reform the "reunion" and bring Sephiroth back to life and take revenge on the planet. That's about it. It's a pretty weak storyline compared to what the game had to offer. Some people may like the story, but personally, they could have done more with the plot. How? I don't know. But the plot definitely feels that it lacks a sense of depth. Character development as well as conversations are lacking too. My favorite quote (below) is probably one of the best ones there is (and it's a pretty weak quote anyways.. unfortunately).

In short, this movie had a world of potential in it, being a sequel to the most popular Final Fantasy game to this date. However, it seems like the directors focused all of their budgets on the graphics and the action sequences and lot the storyline a bit loose. It's not a BAD storyline, just lacks the kind of depth other Square works had to offer.

---
If you don't feel like reading through my BS, here's just the pros and cons of this movie
+++++Tifa's Clothes+++++
+Crazy action
+Classic music
+ACTION SEQUENCES!
+Best graphics to this date.
+Did I mention the action?

-----...On your mom!-----
-Lack of depth in the storyline.
-not enough Aerith! =T

-If you haven't played through FF7 you won't get a thing... except for the action

Went to fuu fuu tei today for lunch. It's been a while since I went there, I'm starting to miss that crazy great orgasmic ramen. (And if you love ramen and haven't been to fuu fuu tei you're missing out).

Took like a 5, hour nap at home after. Sleeping on the sofa at home sure beats sleeping on the bed at school. I don't think I've ever gotten used to sleeping in the dorm (and probably never will). The air is bad, room feels stuffy, extremely hot (roomate refuses to turn on AC and I don't want to make him catch a cold). I think I'll be lucky to get at most 5 hours of sleep a day in the dorms. So glad it's all over in just a week. Good thing I have a lucky finals week - monday, tuesday and I'm done. Bad thing is that I won't have time to study.. (oh well... not like I would study anyways).

Been really bored lately. Taking too many things back from the dorm leaves me with not much things to do. The weather in UC-ARRRRGgghhh is too damn hot to go out and do anything... Too lazy to even walk over to my car and drive out to eat since my car feels like an oven. Only leaves me to watch Gundam SEED Destiny, Ultraman NEXUS... (Btw those are good series ppl should watch ^^) Oh and damn my favorite thing to do, study for my finals. I keep telling myself ONLY 1 MORE WEEK! But it seems the more I remind myself of that the longer that week has become.
